20well%20known%20that%20transgender%20youth%20awaiting%20hormone%20therapy%20have%20high%20rates%20of%20mental%20health%20challenges%2C%20including%20depression%2C%20anxiety%2C%20and%20suicidal%20ideation.%20Accessing%20care%20that%20is%20affirming%20and%20supportive%2C%20including%20primary%20care%20and%20counselling%2C%20can%20also%20be%20a%20challenge.The%20purpose%20of%20this%20study%20was%20to%20understand%20the%20experiences%20of%20youth%20and%20their%20caregivers%20on%20the%20waitlist%20for%20the%20Winnipeg%2C%20Manitoba-based%20Gender%20Diversity%20Affirmation%20and%20Action%20for%20Youth%20%28GDAAY%29%20clinic%2C%20the%20provincial%20transgender%20health%20clinic.%20Specifically%2C%20we%20were%20interested%20in%20what%20community%20based%20resources%20youth%20were%20accessing%2C%20mental%20health%20impacts%2C%20and%20suggestions%20for%20improvements.Qualitative%2C%20semi-structured%20interviews%20were%20conducted.%20Youth%20aged%2014-17%20years%20on%20the%20waitlist%20for%2012-24%20months%20for%20gender-affirming%20hormone%20therapy%20assessment%20and%20their%20caregivers%20were%20recruited.%20Separate%20interviews%20were%20conducted%20for%20youth%20and%20their%20caregivers.%20All%20interviews%20were%20virtual%2C%20recorded%2C%20and%20transcribed%20prior%20to%20thematic%20analysis.Youth%20%28n%3D8%29%20and%20caregivers%20%28n%3D9%29%20described%20barriers%20to%20supported%20transition.%20The%20first%20theme%2C%20%5Cu201cIn%20a%20Black%20Hole%5Cu201d%20describes%20frustration%20and%20disappointment%20with%20the%20lack%20of%20regular%20ongoing%20communications%20from%20GDAAY.%20It%20also%20extends%20to%20the%20mental%20health%20challenges%20faced%20by%20youth%20and%20caregivers%20alike.%20Anxiety%20and%20self-harm%20were%20consistently%20described%2C%20with%20caregivers%20volunteering%20more%20information%20on%20self-harm%20and%20suicidality%20than%20youth.%20Youth%20described%20dysphoria%20and%20two%20youth%20found%20alternative%20providers%20for%20hormone%20therapy%20while%20on%20the%20waitlist.%20Our%20second%20theme%2C%20%5Cu201cStructural%20Transphobia%5Cu201d%2C%20describes%20the%20attitudinal%2C%20technological%2C%20physical%2C%20and%20architectural%20barriers%20faced%20by%20the%20participants.%20For%20example%2C%20one%20caregiver%20described%20a%20hospital%20admission%20for%20suicide%20attempt%20during%20which%20the%20hospital%20bracelet%20displayed%20the%20wrong%20gender%2C%20the%20wrong%20name%2C%20contributing%20to%20frequent%20mis-gendering.%20Frustration%20with%20the%20inability%20to%20change%20the%20name%20and%20gender%20marker%20in%20provincial%20charting%20systems%20was%20similarly%20of%20concern.%20Our%20final%20theme%2C%20%5Cu201cManitoba%3A%20An%20Information%20Desert%5Cu201d%20describes%20the%20systemic%20barriers%20faced%20including%20lack%20of%20knowledgeable%20providers%20and%20reliable%20information%20within%20the%20province.%20Youth%20and%20caregivers%20described%20concerns%20with%20identifying%20primary%20care%20and%20councilors%20that%20understood%20challenges%20specific%20to%20transgender%20youth.Although%20delays%20in%20gender-affirming%20therapy%20were%20noted%2C%20youth%20socially%20transitioned%20and%20accessed%20existing%20resources.%20However%2C%20mental%20health%20concerns%20persisted%20and%20participants%20felt%20frustrated%20and%20unsupported%20during%20their%20extensive%20wait%20times.%20Improved%20experiences%20may%20be%20achieved%20by%20additional%20communication%20from%20the%20clinic%2C%20hands-on%20assistance%20with%20accessing%20relevant%20resources%2C%20and%20an%20improved%20online%20presence.Funding%20was%20obtained%20by%20a%20resident%20research%20small%20grant%20from%20the%20University%20of%20Manitoba.%20A%20similar%20abstract%20was%20submitted%20to%20CPEG%20but%20it%20focuses%20on%20a%20new%20intervention%20of%20a%20phone%20call%20from%20social%20work%20when%20a%20youth%20is%20added%20to%20the%20waitlist.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%222024-10-01%22%2C%22section%22%3A%22%22%2C%22partNumber%22%3A%22%22%2C%22partTitle%22%3A%22%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%2210.1093%5C%2Fpch%5C%2Fpxae067.005%22%2C%22citationKey%22%3A%22%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%5C%2F%5C%2Fdoi.org%5C%2F10.1093%5C%2Fpch%5C%2Fpxae067.005%22%2C%22PMID%22%3A%22%22%2C%22PMCID%22%3A%22%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%221205-7088%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%226QG4CRT4%22%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222024-10-28T11%3A40%3A15Z%22%7D%7D%2C%7B%22key%22%3A%22QLNI4K57%22%2C%22library%22%3A%7B%22id%22%3A5236938%7D%2C%22meta%22%3A%7B%22creatorSummary%22%3A%22Brammer%20et%20al.%22%2C%22parsedDate%22%3A%222024-10-26%22%2C%22numChildren%22%3A0%7D%2C%22bib%22%3A%22%26lt%3Bdiv%20class%3D%26quot%3Bcsl-bib-body%26quot%3B%20style%3D%26quot%3Bline-height%3A%202%3B%20padding-left%3A%201em%3B%20text-indent%3A-1em%3B%26quot%3B%26gt%3B%5Cn%20%20%26lt%3Bdiv%20class%3D%26quot%3Bcsl-entry%26quot%3B%26gt%3BBrammer%2C%20M.%20K.%2C%20Goodrich%2C%20K.%20M.%2C%20%26amp%3B%20Sands%2C%20H.%20C.%20%282024%29.%20Trans-cending%20Paren
