20identifying%20transgender%20youths%2C%20who%20were%20supported%20by%20their%20parents%20in%20a%20social%20gender%20transition%20%28changing%20their%20name%2C%20pronouns%2C%20hairstyle%2C%20and%20clothing%29%20by%20age%2012%20%28M%5Cnage%20at%20transition%5Cu2009%3D%5Cu20096.5%3B%20N%5Cu2009%3D%5Cu2009317%29%3B%20%282%29%20a%20group%20of%20their%20siblings%2C%20who%20were%20cisgender%20at%20the%20beginning%20of%20their%20participation%20in%20the%20study%20%28N%5Cu2009%3D%5Cu2009218%29%3B%20and%20%283%29%20a%20group%20of%20cisgender%20youths%20who%20were%20age%5Cu2010%20and%20gender%5Cu2010matched%20to%2C%20but%20not%20family%20members%20of%2C%20the%20early%20identifying%20transgender%20youths%20%28N%5Cu2009%3D%5Cu2009377%29.%20Data%20on%20the%20youths%26%23039%3B%20identities%20have%20been%20collected%20from%20the%20youths%20themselves%20and%20their%20parents%20between%202013%20and%202024.%20We%20had%20two%20primary%20research%20goals.%20First%2C%20we%20described%20stability%20or%20change%20in%20youths%26%23039%3B%20gender%20identity%20%28Chapter%204%29%20and%20sexual%20orientation%20%28Chapter%206%29.%20We%20asked%20whether%20transgender%20youths%26%23039%3B%20rates%20of%20change%20were%20or%20were%20not%20different%20from%20those%20of%20cisgender%20youths.%20Second%2C%20we%20examined%20whether%20measures%20of%20gender%20development%20earlier%20in%20development%20were%20related%20to%20youths%26%23039%3B%20later%20gender%20identity%20%28Chapter%205%29%20or%20sexual%20orientation%20%28Chapter%206%29%20trajectories%20into%20adolescence.%20Stability%20in%20gender%20identity%20was%20by%20far%20the%20most%20common%20pathway%20for%20youths%20in%20all%20three%20groups%2C%20with%20over%2080%25%20of%20youths%20showing%20stability%20throughout%20their%20participation%20in%20the%20study.%20We%20saw%20similarity%20between%20the%20three%20groups%20of%20youths%2C%20such%20that%20the%20early%20identifying%20transgender%20youths%20were%20no%20more%20or%20less%20likely%20to%20show%20gender%20change%20than%20their%20siblings%20or%20youths%20in%20the%20unrelated%20comparison%20sample.%20Nevertheless%2C%2011.9%25%20of%20youths%20who%20started%20as%20cisgender%20were%20not%20so%20at%20their%20most%20recent%20report%5Cu2014a%20much%20higher%20proportion%20than%20would%20be%20predicted%20based%20on%20assumptions%20held%20in%20classic%20developmental%20psychology%20research%20about%20gender%20since%20the%201950s.%20When%20gender%20change%20did%20occur%20in%20all%20three%20groups%2C%20it%20overwhelmingly%20involved%20change%20to%20%28and%2C%20to%20a%20lesser%20extent%2C%20from%29%20a%20nonbinary%20gender%20identity.%20Results%20were%20similar%20regardless%20of%20whether%20youth%5Cu2010%20or%20parent%5Cu2010report%20data%20were%20considered%2C%20and%20we%20found%20no%20evidence%20that%20youths%20were%20more%20or%20less%20likely%20to%20change%20at%20particular%20ages.%20We%20observed%20some%20evidence%20that%20more%20gender%20nonconformity%20in%20childhood%20%28e.g.%2C%20more%20femininity%20in%20childhood%20among%20children%20living%20as%20boys%29%20was%20related%20to%20later%20gender%20change%2C%20but%20results%20were%20somewhat%20inconsistent%20across%20measures%20and%20gender%20identities.%20Youths%20showed%20diverse%20sexual%20orientations%2C%20with%2060%25%20of%20binary%20transgender%20and%2033%25%20of%20cisgender%20adolescents%20expressing%20queer%20%28i.e.%2C%20not%20straight%29%20romantic%20or%20sexual%20interest.%20A%20high%20percentage%20of%20youths%20overall%20%2837%25%29%20indicated%20interest%20in%20both%20boys%20and%20girls%5Cu2014a%20pattern%20particularly%20common%20among%20nonbinary%20youths.%20Finally%2C%20more%20than%20a%20third%20of%20youths%20have%20shown%20change%20in%20their%20sexual%20orientation%2C%20and%20childhood%20gender%20nonconformity%20was%20associated%20with%20whether%20currently%20binary%20transgender%20or%20cisgender%20teenagers%20most%20recently%20reported%20a%20queer%20identity.%20Our%20results%20accord%20with%20recent%20evidence%20indicating%20that%20today%26%23039%3Bs%20youth%20are%20defying%20assumptions%20about%20gender%20and%20sexual%20orientation%5Cu00a0from%20decades%20of%20developmental%20research%2C%20considering%20gender%20and%20sexual%20orientation%20to%20be%20relatively%20flexible%20social%20identities%5Cu00a0rather%20than%20ones%20that%20are%20fixed%2C%20and%20view%20gender%20as%20having%20more%20than%20two%20categories.%20Early%20identifying%20transgender%20children%26%23039%3Bs%20sense%20of%20their%20own%20gender%20was%20no%20more%20or%20less%20stable%20than%20cisgender%20children%26%23039%3Bs%2C%20suggesting%20that%20children%20who%20are%20supported%20in%20their%20transgender%20identities%20tend%20to%20show%20developmental%20patterns%20that%20mirror%20their%20cisgender%20peers.%20Finally%2C%20in%20Chapter%207%2C%20we%20discuss%20how%20our%20findings%20exemplify%20and%20respond%20to%20this%20unique%20historical%20moment%2C%20the%20ways%20in%20which%20our%20findings%20do%20and%20do%
